The Beat of a Drum

It is midsummer, the evenings are long and warm, and my heart is stirring for some adventure. How long has it been since I have been to a Pow Wow? Marvelled at the dancers, their regalia full of colour and spirit, and felt that pull of the drum and the men's strong voices calling out the songs for the performances. I have been reading Waubgeshig Rice's latest novel, Moon of the Fallen Leaves, and am feeling a renewed beat in my heart for these vibrant celebrations of the First Nations - the people, their heritage, and their culture.

There is so much to see and do at a Pow Wow. In between performances, I enjoy sampling the various foods on offer, and browsing the tables and tents filled with the handcrafted wonders of Indigenous artists and artisans, in search of special finds for myself, family, or friends. The exquisite beadwork is hard to resist!

While the atmosphere is always relaxed and inviting, there are some important things to consider (Do's and Don'ts at Canadian Pow Wows), such as when to sit or stand during a ceremony, asking before taking photos, or how to approach an Elder. Worth a quick read!

If you are in Niagara: July 26, 2024, 4 - 8 pm, Niagara Regional Native Centre

Treat yourself to this unique and fulfilling experience this summer, and make a day of it!
